Like A Retro Saturday

It's funny that we now look at life through the prism of coronavirus... as in life before covid-19 and life after, the separation point being March 13. These days the pandemic is actually worse than it was during the early days in March. But now we know a little bit more, more places are open. We now know we shouldn't be going indoors where space is tight and there are a lot of people. This includes restaurants. But it's ok to eat outside. Which is why it made me glad to take Johnnie to Elysee this morning to have breakfast there for the first time since we all got sent to home isolation in mid-March. That's 4 months ago! And when we got there, there were a couple of the regular patrons in line. Good to see them too. And good to be recognized. Hey, I've only been taking Johnnie here since he was born! And so we had the usual croissant and sausage and scrambled eggs, and fresh squeezed orange juice. And we ate outside. It felt familiar, but also different. Still Johnnie managed to score some free cookies on our way out and that was cool! Since we were in Westwood anyway, I thought I might as well swing by Target Westwood and pick up supplies. And of course I had to swing by the kid's clothes department to look for Johnnie gear. And this morning, I finally found some toddler's pajamas that were his size! And they were dinosaur pajamas too! Perfect. I also couldn't resist driving by the old apartment. How come these occupants' windows are always closed? Has it been nearly 4 years since we moved out of here? I chuckled to myself remembering all those times I had to haul shopping bags from Target up 3 flights of stairs. But then again was that really all that different from walking from Ralphs with my shopping bags these days? Answer? Yes, those 3 flights of steps were different LOL LOL. Still I fondly gave the penthouse a backwards look as I drove past. So with the blast from the past done, Johnnie and I went home and went back to the present. That would be watching his octonauts in my apartment while I did a couple of loads of laundry. And then in almost no time at all, it was already lunch time. Today I got some Panda Express for Johnnie, but we simply went to the Sawtelle location, not all the way to Westwood. Yes, I was making a full-on effort to make this feel like a Lisa work-Saturday. I was fully prepared to look after Johnnie until well past dinner. On Saturdays, Lisa's office closes at 2:30 PM now. But knowing her and how stressful Saturdays are, she usually needs at least a few hours to do notes and to decompress. Which is why it was a huge surprise to get a call at 3 PM. It came from Diana Gold. Lisa did a procedure on her and she was the last patient on Lisa's schedule. She was headed to Lisa's house to wait for her, and was asking if Johnnie was coming over. That basically gave me a U-turn for my afternoon. And so I got Johnnie over there, opened Lisa's house for Diana, and waited for Lisa with her. We talked for a bit and Lisa finally came home around 4:00 PM. In the meantime, Johnnie was pretty occupied and amused just playing with Grandma Diana. Lisa now being home, I made up some excuse about having to get back to the house to do my taxes, which was actually a real thing... they're due on Wednesday and I really did need to get them done. Of course I didn't actually work on them today. I distracted myself with some TV. I was all set to do another evening of binge watching... until i get another call from Lisa around 6 PM. Apparently she was ready to crash right there on the couch and Johnnie needed looking after. Wasn't it funny that Johnnie actually told me he wanted to build a robot because sometimes mommy would leave him to play alone when she is tired or when she is working or otherwise occupied with something? I told him when that happened, he should call me so I could play with him. Well, tonight, he called me. And so I headed on over to Lisa's and she was already out on the couch. I guess Diana had long gone by then. I took Johnnie to get McNuggets and took him back to the apartment to have dinner. Gave him some pasta in chicken broth too. At least he had a good dinner tonight. And I let him hang around for a bit. And when i brought him back, Lisa was still out on the couch. It was already 9 PM. And so I gave him a shower, brushed his teeth, got him ready for bed. Even helped clean up in the living room when I tried to get Lisa to go to bed. Talk about going way over and above what I have to do. I'm still doing shit for Lisa when she gets on overwhelm. She still can't predict her own patterns. I just left it as my good deed of the day. And Lisa was still about to have an agro moment on me. How many a Saturday did she pull this stuff off? I'm just hoping she just goes upstairs and goes back to sleep already. Which is why it was great to simply bug out at the earliest possible moment get to go home after all that. I did it all for Johnnie and that was plenty good enough for me.
