Navigating Through Panic

So today this whole coronavirus thing takes another step up a notch. We found out this morning that Jazz center Rudy Gobert had tested positive for coronavirus. The resulting action was swift and decisive. The NBA decided to suspend its season. Just like that. Now THAT is serious. And it isn't something to be ignored anymore. With all the facts about how it is - to me anyway - relatively low risk, there is still so much certainty that an entire country [Italy] is basically in full quarantine right now. And their intention is to prevent spreading the virus. Yes it's the same actions we would need to take in the middle of the regular flu season. Somehow the uncertainty has given way to fear and has escalated to full panic mode. And by the end of the day we got word from our landlord at work, the Federal Reserve headquarters in Seattle that they are now limiting access to the entire building to essential personnel only. Yikes. That means the half-half plan we were supposed to institute starting Monday is now an all-all plan. That means EVERYONE is now working from home starting Monday. Yikes! Now I'm scrambling my team to make sure everyone has the necessary hardware to do just that. An emergency meeting was scheduled for tomorrow.  But there's no doubt about it. Folks are now in panic mode. Sigh.
As for me it was business as usual in the morning... EXCEPT that I couldn't sleep. Must be all the nervous energy. I got up and watched some videos on trading ES futures. I'm sure there's a ton of money to be made now that the stock market is tanking big time too. But probably not at 1 AM in the morning when I was watching it. I did manage to knock off right around 2 AM and then wake up in a panic at 7:15 more than a half hour after my usual wake up time on a school day. Needless to say I felt rushed getting Johnnie ready but I still managed to get him his full breakfast, still managed to let him watch Peep and Chirp and was out the door by 7:50. What I ended up sacrificing was my own shower. I had to just douse my head in water to make my hair presentable and brush my teeth. Johnnie was his normal be-bopping self. Look at the pic of him picking up a flower from the sidewalk. And then he pretty much just played with his friends when Dylan Ji came in with a box of Pringles.  I'm so glad he seemed unaffected by the Cyrus thing yesterday. He went into the classroom and off I went to work. And then all the drama of the day started unfolding. Yesterday I spent most of my day shopping for computers. Today I was pretty much doing more of the same. And thinking up ways to do things electronically with our existing workflows, at least for those teams that are mostly paper...like our Finance teams. Unbelievable that they are the monoliths of the company. Still I managed to squeeze enough time to do the analysis of the financials for Mar Vista Star. Turned out Lisa and I had put in almost the same amount of money into the joint account by now. But a $750 deposit from me really was for the Giving Campaign and so shouldn't have been used. That means I DO need to put in $750 for us to be even. At least it didn't rain today like it did yesterday. And it had gotten warmer towards the end of the day in fact. I picked up Johnnie at school and his first ask was to get teriyaki chicken. He knew full well it was Panda Express night. And of course we would find ourselves in Westwood tonight. Look at the pic of Johnnie wolfing down his chicken. It is now lighter later. And it wasn't dark yet by the time we got done and it was already well past 6 PM. Tonight we worked on Johnnie's reading and his writing and when I looked in his bag, I found that he had a report card for the 2nd "tri-mester" such as it were. And he had stellar grades, particularly in reading and math. He was well above average, and already at kindergarten level. Where he needed the most help was phonetics according to the report card. But I think he also needs a lot more guidance with self-regulation and social skills. Of course that guidance has to come from Lisa and I. But still I think he'll be just fine. We watched Frozen 2 again tonight... and I let him simply because now there are no NBA games to watch. How disappointing would this be if the Lakers don't get to play for a championship they are in a good position to at least play for?!! I mean didn't they just establish themselves as the best team in the league just this past weekend? All I can say now is how glad and lucky I am to have watched Sunday's game in person! That said, Johnnie and I watched Frozen 2 again tonight and then the new Magic School Bus that Johnnie hadn't watched in months. He's cycling back I know.  Most important part was that he was in bed early and that I knocked off to sleep just as early as he did. I could use it. I could use it right.about.now.
